O-K Periodical Submission

Today Alice and I submitted our first project together as The Drawing Machine! It will hopefully be part of the O.K Periodical issue #4 that will be released in the next couple months.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

"29 Curious Objects"

The project started with a trip to the local second hand shop in Eindhoven, NL. Our objective was to find objects that in one way or another intrigued and baffled us. Once we made up our small collection of objects, we came to realize that the objects themselves on the surface were very ordinary. It wasn't until we began to explore them from different angles that we found the curiosity within them.

Will Broome

Will Broome is a guy who lets his intuition guide him, and I am a strong believer in this. He has done work for many fashion labels from Marc Jacobs to Gucci to Vans and his illustrations are very quirky and always fantastic. You can check him out HERE, it is definitely worth a looooook!

PATSWERK

For those few who still enjoy the beauty of handwork, check out PATSWERK. They are a group of fantastic artists and graphic designers from the Netherlands who, simply said, produce beautiful work. Check them out HERE!

Under Great White Northern Lights

The White Stripes are due to release a new album. It's not just any album (because it's never "just" any album when it comes to the White Stripes), but it's a soundtrack to the new documentary film being released about the White Stripes' epic tour of Canada. Yes...Oh, Canada! You can pre-order the beautiful box set HERE.

Aesthetic Apparatus

Five years ago I went to see these guys lecture and today I rediscovered them. They are Aesthetic Apparatus and they are super fantastic. They started their own print studio out of their basement and what started off as a part-time thing turned into what they are today. Gives all of us a bit of hope. Check them out HERE!

Companion Parrot

This is London based designer Tithi Kutchamuch's newest product. It is a parrot that at first glance looks, well, rather peculiar. But it gets even better when you pull it's skeletal head off its body to reveal the birds entrails dangling from a chain. You then wear this chain around your neck. Sounds like some weird witch doctor ritual, which is maybe the point. My point however is it a beautiful object with a beautiful surprise and I enjoy it a lot. Check out the website HERE for more beautiful work.

Moleskin Cover. IT FINALLY CAME!!

So a while back I wrote about a graphic I sent in to be engraved on a leather moleskin cover. I almost gave up on it even arriving (it came all the way from Portland, Oregon) when just today as I was checking the mail it arrived!! I was very exciting. So here are the promised photos of the final piece, and it is beautiful. I highly recommend using Engrave Your Book, they are fantastic. Check them out HERE!

WAT-AAH!

This is the result of a caring mother and her dream to make children drink pure water without resorting to fizzy pops or sugar loaded drinks. Apparently kids in America don't like to drink just water. Fair play on her part though. Obesity is a huge problem and number one killer in America so it's about time things begin to shift. I guess the cool bottles is also a selling strategy...I'd buy one! Check out the site HERE...it's quite nice.

UGBOT

Gavin Edwards is UGBOT, and UGBOT is very cool. For a look into the mind of Gavin Edwards, check out his site HERE.

Beautiful When Wet

Designer Kristine Bjaadal has created a piece that is both beautiful and playful. It is a tablecloth that appears to be like any other at first glance, until someone accidentally (or in a drunken state) spills their drink upon it. At first one would yell and curse the drunk who spilled red wine on their freshly starched white tablecloth, but that anger would quickly subside as the stain begins to reveal a hidden pattern.

Although I think the pattern itself could have been pushed a little bit more and been a bit more original, it is nonetheless a great idea. The only problem I can foresee is people "accidentally" spilling their drinks all too often, but ultimately who really cares when it can turn a boring meal into something a bit more fun. Be sure to check Kristine out HERE.

Wooden Robots

Super cool wooden robots by Egg + Yolk. They are made from wood off-cuts making them all unique and different, and all beautiful. Check out their Etsy page HERE for more cool things.

A New Meaning of Compact

I came across this piece whilst browsing random images on the internet. I tried to find out who the artist was but it just wasn't happening. Then just now, maybe 15 minutes ago to be roughly exact (that was on purpose), I came across the same images but this time with the artist who did them! His name is Michael Johansson from Sweden and you can see more of his work HERE. I think his work is fantastic. In fact I have used his notion of compact as inspiration for one of my projects, so stay tuned folks.

It's Nice That

It's Nice That issue #2 is out! It's a great blog and a great publication. Be sure to check it out HERE!

The Drawing Machine

The Drawing Machine is Alice Schwab and Daniel Rossi (that's me!). It began with a shared passion for drawing, books, graphics, food, and really lame jokes. Now it has become a wonderful project for the both of us where we can explore and have fun with all those things that we shared a passion for (the lame jokes just keep a flowin'). We have just begun to put our identity together (see above) and soon after we will launch our website! For now however, you can check us out at our Society6 page HERE! Keep an eye out for many more great things to come!    :-)

Julia

Julia is a graphic design studio that is Valerio Di Lucente (Italy), Erwan Lhuissier (France) and Hugo Timm (Brazil). Despite the conflict one can only imagine they have when the world cup rolls around, the bottom line is they do good work. They only recently graduated from the RCA in London, and already they have done some very nice work for some very nice clients. This is a studio you should really look out for in the years to come. Check their website out HERE to see more of their work. It will not disappoint!

Made by Tim

Tim Bjorn is a Danish graphic artist. His style is simple, his work is beautiful...period. Just period. Check his website out HERE .

The Lady and the Reaper

An absolutely FANTASTIC animated short film that is a must see. It is about an old lady who is about to pass away, and the struggle between the grim reaper and a self-indulged doctor. It is up for an Oscar and you can see it HERE. Very funny!

Miller Goodman

Miller Goodman: master blocks-man. Check out his website HERE to see all the cool blocks he has designed. Exciting stuff!

Avant Bureau

I didn't really know what to write about today until I stumbled upon the Avant Bureau creative agency. When it comes to doing visual identities, they are pro. I love designing visual identities. There is just something so very satisfying about successfully being able to create an atmosphere for an entity in just simple gestures of type and image. Key word here: successfully! Today was spent hashing out the visual identity for mine and Alice's collective called The Drawing Machine. It was a fantastic day with good results. Soon we too will have our website up but for now check us out on our Society6 page HERE. Also before I sign out for the day, be sure to check out Avant Bureau's website HERE...it's quite cool. Have a great weekend!

Beautiful drawings on paper, paper

Another great find at the Polish Market today!! Printed in Italy...so beautiful I might have to find a frame for it the next time I go to the Polish :-)

Ravensburger Memory Game!

For an upcoming Drawing Machine project I am in search of curious objects. So today I took a trip to the Polish Market (the second hand store) because they never disappoint when it comes to curious things. Whilst rummaging through the array of randomness, I came across this little gem. It's an old Ravensburger memory game! So what you say? Well I took one look at the illustrations and fell in love! It's so hard to find decent toys these days that just are just beautifully designed and illustrated. I also have an old Ravensburger a-MAZE-ing Labyrinth game which is illustrated just as beautifully. Ah, to design toys! I smell another project in the air...
